CloudFAQs

Confused about cloud? Let a member of our team help answer your questions.

What technology is your public cloud built on?

Our public cloud platform is a true enterprise cloud. Based wholly on VMware technology, there is no single point of failure anywhere in the platform.

It utilises tier-1 hardware from HP, Dell, Brocade and EMC. Storage is all SAN-based and connectivity runs at 10Gb.

We also run multiple other cloud platforms, based on different technologies (Open Stack, Xen, VMware, Hyper-V), using a variety of hardware.

Like all things in life it's important to use the right tool for the job and a cloud platform is no different. Don't get caught up in marketing terminology. Many customers try and compare Cloud providers with one another, but this is a mistake - all hosting provider 'clouds' are different, built at different times using different technologies, hardware, and features. If you wish to discuss what cloud platform is most suitable to you, please contact our sales team.

I've seen the same cloud server spec elsewhere for less, will you price match?

Cloud servers or virtual servers are almost impossible to compare, because although they may have the same number of CPU cores or RAM, it depends on what CPU and RAM is being used on the underlying hardware.

We are confident that our public cloud platform represents superb value for money and that you won’t find better infrastructure or service running a cloud environment for less than our prices.

What's the difference between 'Public' and 'Private' clouds you offer?

A cloud server from our public cloud is a virtual server hosted on our own hardware. You have admin access to the cloud server, but cannot access the physical servers or platform it is hosted on.

A cloud server running on your private cloud is a virtual server hosted on hardware you control the specification of. You can ask for upgrades or changes to the hardware, as well as changing how much physical resource you allocate to your virtual servers.

When should I get a private cloud?

Normally this question is answered by pure economics – if you have a requirement for a number of servers, then it is more cost effective to run your own private cloud platform than to keep buying servers from a public cloud.

There is also a decision to be made around control. Many customers do not wish to run on a shared platform of any sort, so will have a private cloud, even if it is a very small one. This provides them with complete control over what runs on the platform, the security of the platform, and how it is setup and configured.

Conversely, some clients have no desire to ever have access to the physical servers that run the virtual environment, so will only take servers from our public cloud.
